G20 Leaders Welcome US Efforts on Ukraine Peace

Many leaders of participating countries at the G20 summit currently underway in South Africa welcomed the ongoing American efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine, reaffirming their support for a path that leads to a fair and permanent resolution to the conflict. In a joint statement released by the European Council in Brussels, the leaders stated that the initial draft of the American 28-point plan «includes important elements that will be essential for achieving a just and lasting peace». The leaders added that this draft «can serve as a basis to be developed», confirming their readiness to engage in continuing work on the plan to ensure the sustainability of any future agreement. The leaders stressed their adherence to the principle that «borders cannot be changed by force», while at the same time expressing concern about the proposed restrictions on the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the plan, which could make Ukraine «vulnerable to attack in the future». The leaders confirmed that the implementation of the provisions related to the European Union or NATO requires the consent of both EU and NATO member states, and noted the strength of the continued international support for Ukraine, explaining that coordination between Kyiv and its allies, foremost among them the United States, will continue in the coming days.
